The September Sisters

The September Sisters
By: Jillian Cantor

Abigail Reed and her younger sister, Becky, are always at each other's throats. Their mother calls them the September Sisters, because their birthdays are only a day apart, and pretends that they're best friends. But really, they delight in making each other miserable. Then Becky disappears in the middle of the night, and a torn gold chain with a sapphire heart charm is the only clue to the mystery of her kidnapping. Abby struggles to cope with her own feelings of guilt and loss as she tries to keep her family together. When her world is at its bleakest, Abby meets a new neighbor, Tommy, who is dealing with his own loss, and the two of them discover that love can bloom, even when it's surrounded by thorns.

summary from back of book

My Rating: 5/5

Okay, so this book was soo amazing, I can't stop thinking about it. This is one of the best books I've read so far this year and by far the best debut novel I've read so far this year as well. The characters in this book are so real, so realistic and well developed it's insane. I was only on chapter three when I began to feel like I'd know the Reed family my entire life. I was suddenly struck with such sadness for what was going on; the kidnapping of Becky, the beginning of a family being torn apart, and Abigail who becomes neglected, no one paying much attention to her or her struggle.

This novel takes place over the course of two years in which so much changes. This is where the great character development is quite noticeable. All of the characters in the novel no matter if they're minor or major go through some change, Abigail especially. I loved the realistic quality of this book, the amazing writing, and overall the story that at times was difficult to get through yet touching and thought provoking all at the same time. A must read!
