Getting Revenge On Lauren Wood
By: Eileen Cook
Popularity is the best revenge...
In the final weeks of eighth grade, Lauren Wood made a choice. She betrayed her best friend, Helen, in a manner so publicly humiliating that Helen had to move to a new town just to save face. Ditching Helen was worth it, though, because Lauren started high school as one of the It Girls--and now, at the start of her senior year, she's the cheerleading captain, the quarterback's girlfriend, and the undisputed queen bee. Lauren has everything she's ever wanted, and she has forgotten all about her ex-best friend.
But Helen could never forget Lauren. After three years of obsessing, she's moving back to her old town. She has a new name and a new look, but she hasn't dropped her old grudges. She has a detailed plan to bring down her former BFF by taking away everything that's ever been important to Lauren—starting with her boyfriend.
Watch out, Lauren Wood. Things are about to get bitchy.
summary from book
My Rating: 4/5
Getting Revenge On Lauren Wood was just so much fun to read. I was absorbed into the story right away. Really, how could I not be? The opening chapter commences with one of Helen's highly imaginative scenarios surrounding Lauren Wood and a science classroom dissection. The entire scene really set the mood for this book and definitely kept me wanting to know more and more as the story progressed.
When you first meet Helen, she's still not over the fact that Lauren, her ex best friend betrayed her quite some time ago. Helen having been publicly humiliated has never quite healed from the entire ordeal and spends a lot of her time placing Lauren into terrible situations in her mind to sort of live out this fantasy of doing onto Lauren as Lauren did unto her. Then, a change of events allows Helen to get Lauren back for real, in person. With a new name and a plan, she sets out to make Lauren's life miserable.
One of the main things that kept me interested in this book is that I didn't know what to expect. I wanted to see what Helen had in store for Lauren even though as things progressed, I did start to feel badly for Lauren. I did like Helen and I did sympathize with her, especially in the beginning. At first, Helen's set in her ways but there's nice character development on her part. At times I thought she was crazy but the author did a good job of balancing out the crazy moments with the sane and rational.
I liked that this book wasn't predictable. There were quite a few things thrown into the mix that added some variation to the story which I didn't necessarily anticipate but really enjoyed.
There are a lot of books out there that deal with mean girls and Getting Revenge On Lauren Wood does a good job of balancing out the serious moments with some very funny ones as well. This is definitely a mean girl book that is on the lighter and fun side. It's very entertaining and will keep you intrigued the whole way through. I really do recommend it, especially if you want something that will hold your attention and make you laugh.
