Boy Proof

Boy Proof
By: Cecil Castellucci

Meet Egg. Her real name is Victoria Jurgen, but she's renamed herself after the kick-ass heroine of her favorite sci-fi movie, TERMINAL EARTH.

Like her namesake, Egg dresses all in white, colors her eyebrows, and shaves her head. She always knows the right answers, she's always in control, and she's far too busy -- taking photos for the school paper, meeting with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Club, and hanging out at the "creature shop" with her dad, the special-effects makeup wizard -- to be bothered with friends, much less members of the opposite sex. As far as Egg is concerned, she's boy proof, and she likes it that way.

But then Egg meets a boy named Max, a boy who's smart and funny and creative and cool . . . and happens to like Egg. Could this be the end of the world -- at least as Egg knows it?

My Rating: 3.5/5

Boy Proof is another book I picked up on a whim at the library. The summary that comes with the actual book is a little different from what is written above in the sense that it is very brief and left a lot to be imagined. Needless to say I picked up Boy Proof because it sounded different from anything I had been reading at the time and I was drawn to the unique main character Victoria who prefers to be called Egg.

Like many contemporary novels, Boy Proof moves at a slow yet steady pace. I was always drawn into Victoria's world however and I looked forward to what was coming next. As I mentioned above, the summary I read was very brief so I was always curious as to what would unravel.

There is a dash of romance in this book but mostly it is about Victoria as she comes to terms with who she is and the growth experienced as a result. There is also a dash of family conflict mostly occurring between Victoria and her once famous actress of a mother.

One of my favourite aspects of Boy Proof was Victoria and her unique characteristics and traits. I don't think I've ever read about anyone like her before which was great. I also like the internal transformation that occurs within Egg throughout the story. It's always nice to see a character you followed flourish into who they want to be.

Overall: Boy Proof is a steady moving novel about a girl who accompanied by a unique set of supporting characters grows into a person she can be proud of. If you're looking for a contemporary YA read with a different twist on things, I recommend that you give Boy Proof a try.
