The Reckoning (Darkest Powers, #3)

The Reckoning (Darkest Powers, #3)
By: Kelley Armstrong

Only two weeks ago, life was all too predictable. But that was before I saw my first ghost. Now, along with my supernatural friends Tori, Derek, and Simon, I’m on the run from the Edison Group, which genetically altered us as part of their sinister experiment. We’re hiding in a safe house that might not be as safe as it seems. We’ll be gone soon anyway, back to rescue those we’d left behind and to take out the Edison Group . . . or so we hope.

My Rating: 4.5/5

The Reckoning is the third and final installment in the Darkest Powers trilogy. (The Summoning, The Awakening) This book is a great finish to an exhilarating series that kept me on the edge of my seat for the duration of all three novels. I have to say that out of all the paranormal YA that I've read, this series by Kelley Armstrong is by far my favourite. I think it's because there's just so much happening all the time. There are twists and turns that will leave you bewildered and anxious to read on. There's nothing better than picking up a book and being so immersed and excited to find out what will come next that the time just slips right by as you're absorbed in this intense world that is not your own.

Another reason I feel that I'm very much in love with this series is because it's so different from anything else that I've read. I like how there are so many paranormal elements incorporated into one world and I love just how imaginative Kelley Armstrong is to bring together such an extraordinary plot that will keep you second guessing at the upcoming events for its duration. The characters are also strong and fascinating, and you will sympathize with them from the very beginning as their journey commences. Also, although I am a lover and appreciator of romance in YA I have to say that usually in the paranormal YA books I've read, it's the main focus. As much as that fascinates and draws me in, I have to admit that although there is romance in the Darkest Powers series (mainly in The Reckoning) it only plays a minor role and is not by far the main focal point. I guess after reading so many books that rely heavily on romance, it was great to read something different.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series through and through and am sad to see the characters and their world come to an end. I thought The Reckoning wrapped up quite nicely and realistically still leaving some things to be imagined. It would have been impossible for Kelley Armstrong to wrap up everything that had occurred in this series tidily and perfectly. To be honest, I don't really appreciate perfect endings. I like when some form of chaos or unresolved issues remain because it provides me with a sense of reality. Nothing ever ends off perfectly in real life after all.

Also, not to toot my own horn or anything but I feel I must share this with someone and who better than my awesome fellow book lovers? ;) After reading the second book in this series (The Awakening) I had a prediction that was eating away at me and seeing as I had no one to share it with (I really need to find some real life friends who love reading as much as as I do D:) I decided to post it in my review as a separate comment. Anyways, it was referring to Simon and Tori and AHA! I was right (*does a happy dance*) Alright, that's all I swear. ;)

Fans of this series and Kelley Armstrong's novels in general will be happy to know that she has a new YA paranormal series in the works. The first novel is titled The Gathering and will be released as of right now: April 5th, 2011.

Overall: I REALLY recommend this series. Fans of books filled with mystery, suspense, and paranormal elements will devour these books. Also, if you're interested in giving the paranormal genre a chance but aren't sure where to start, this series is a fantastic place to commence. Just a fair warning though...you will become addicted.
