The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and The Struggle

The Vampire Diaries
By: L.J. Smith

Elena the golden girl, the leader, the one who can have any boy she wants.

Stefan: brooding and mysterious, he seems to be the only one who can resist Elena, even as he struggles to protect her from the horrors that haunt his past.

Damon: sexy, dangerous, and driven by an urge for revenge against Stefan, the brother who betrayed him. Determined to have Elena, he'd kill to possess her.

Collected here in one volume for the first time, volumes one and two of The Vampire Diaries, the tale of two vampire brothers and the beautiful girl torn between them.

summary from book

My Rating: 3/5

So I finally gave in and picked this series up. Originally, this series was published in the early nineties but was later re-packaged and released again once the vampire phenomenon in Young Adult literature really picked up. (Thanks Stephenie Meyer) In this lovely packaged novel with an awesome new cover there is book one The Awakening and book two The Struggle.

I'll be honest and say that The Awakening, the first part of this book was a little boring. It didn't really pick up until the very end, at least not for me. I also wasn't very fond of Elena at the beginning either, she's a little self centered and slightly annoying but she does mature and grow which is good.

The second part of this book, The Struggle, was so so good. There is never a dull moment. Something is always happenening, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The ending I have to say, will not only leave you wanting more, but will leave you running to your local bookstore to pick up the other books in this series. It's such a great twist. I can't wait to see what happens next!

  1. This book does have some great twists. But the next part, the ending will leave you a little, am, confused? Or maybe even disappointed.

  4. L. J. Smith was one of my favorite authors back when this series and her others came out. I'm glad to see people today still reading and enjoying her books :-) If you haven't read it, you might also enjoy her Night World series. I've been waiting for over a decade for the last book in that series to be published - Strange Fate. I hear it's due out next year now :-)

    Happy reading!

  5. maybe the trouble that we're having with the series so far is because of the current vampire stuff we've been reading. the 90s stuff seems a bit tamer but that opinion is based on the first two books. we'll see how the next ones are, eh?
